Our Story

Charles H Coward Ltd, a family run foundry business…

…originating and based in the 7 hills city of Sheffield that specialises in the manufacture and supply of both ferrous and non-ferrous castings for a worldwide network of industries.

Now in its 3rd generation the family business was born in the late 1970’s from a Friday afternoon redundancy and a Monday morning opening in the traditional workshops of the small back streets of Sheffield under its original name of Hogan Brothers & Sons.

In the early days it was Sheffield’s thriving silver industry that set the company on its tracks and with the highly skilled green sand moulders and a keen eye for diversity it wasn’t long before the company’s profile and customer base was beginning to outgrow its premises.

In the following year’s business growth continued…

…at a rapid pace leading to several relocations to larger premises which became a regular feature in the Hogan’s work life. Eventually amalgamation with another foundry took the company to its next level along with the name change to Charles H Coward Ltd.

Business continued to thrive for the Hogan’s newly named Charles H Coward Ltd and silversmithing was now working hand in hand with the more modern moulding skills in the production of brass and aluminium castings and a notable and prestigious list of regular customers ranging from McDonalds to Harrods. English Royalty and the Sultan of Brunei were also keen to experience the Hogan’s work with commissions for a Cast Bronze Memorial for the Queen Mother and the Sultans Silver Tableware being amongst the impressive order books.

It was in 1998…

…when rapid growth and further diversity into the conservatory roofing and building industry yet again meant relocation to larger premises was a requirement and it is here where the company is still based today’s in a modern build facility with office space, warehousing, factory space and more importantly large areas for further expansion & development of the business.

During its time Charles H Coward Ltd has moved from a single manufacturing cell to a group of companies with the diverse nature of the business leading to new companies forming alongside external acquisitions giving the company group its solid structure.

The company group currently consists of 6 subsidiary companies and 2 associated companies and who knows what the future may hold – click here to explore further into the CHC Group.
